THE ROOTS X J DILLA – DILLA JAWNS MIXTAPE

Text

Philadelphia’s finest crew, The Roots, dropped a mixtape to honor the instrumental work of J Dilla. The late producer is famous for crafting beats for the likes of the Pharcyde, A Tribe Called Quest, and even a Grammy-winning track for Janet Jackson. ?uestlove and company give the beats new life thorough their own interpretations of the work. On tracks like Upper Egypt, the live instrumentation adds a completely different dimension, and the results are rich. Fans of both hip-hop juggernauts will appreciate this respectful, expansive tribute to Dilla.

MC Cullah - all the colors of the rainbow

Text

Last year Cullah gave the internets a look into the depths of time and space with his album E=MC Cullah that was well received by many online music sharing sites. Well, hes back with his newest album entitled “All The Cullahs Of The Rainbow” for all to hear. This album is even better than the last. You can almost taste all his different flavors of music. This 19 year old Milwaukee born shows you don’t need a professional recording studio or a corporate label to make music that truly has soul. MC Cullah stands out because he puts sounds together that are smart and make so much sense together, but at the same time, I’ve never heard anything like it. Support this kid, and buy the album if you’re digging the tunes.

Sleep Party People - s/t

Text

Brian Batz, who records under the moniker Sleep Party People, has released his debut album under the same name. Compared to other bedroom musicians, he’s a true original. Many of the album’s songs fall under the category of lullabies, yet, Batz updates the soothing melodies by adding a helium vocal. It’s an innovative approach giving the album a unique signature.

Here’s some early Sunday morning reggae choonz for you…

Text

Its a cold weekend in February and the Cessna’s land. The vibes brew as the room fills, while the bass thumps a beat and the snare drum rings a tune. The chords echo through the room as the smell of analog tape enters the air…..A familiar start to a 10 ft Ganja Plant recording session. We like to keep things fresh, create a vibe, throw around the ideas, write the track, record the track and never play it again. We record almost all of the records live, everyone in one room. The exception would be the occasional vocal, keyboard guitar horn line that was impossible to play at the same time. All of the material is captured by reel to reel 2,4,8,16,24 tracks. During this particular session we were using 8 tracks.

The tracks were as follows:

1 drums

2 bass

3 guitar

4 guitar lead

5 organ/farfisa

6 rhodes/clavinet

7 tenor saxophone

8 percussion

After the record is mixed down to analog we send it to mastering. 10 Deadly Shots went through a very unique mastering process to add to the sound and feel you are hearing. The master was put through a Neumann sp79c Console to a Neumann SAL74b cutting rack then to a Neumann VMS 80 cutting lathe where the lacquer (record) was born. Yes that’s right cut to Vinyl. The last and final step is a high quality transfer from the lacquer to a digital format that you can enjoy as the album 10 Deadly Shots!
